Amcor Rigid Packaging – “Quantum” Lightweighting Technology
A two-step lightweighting technology that eliminates unnecessary material and weight in the finish of a PET bottle. By removing more than 50% of the material and weight from the finish, the Quantum™ technology reduces manufacturing costs and GHG emissions, resulting in energy savings and lower carbon emissions compared to bottles with a traditional finish. Quantum™ technology also allows for up to 100% recycled material use and provides a superior consumer experience with a more sustainable, fully recyclable package. The Quantum finish accepts the same closure our customers use today.
In comparison to our stock spirits flask offerings, we reduced the total weight of our 200ml container by 20% and the 375ml by 13% of the container weight, without impacting the function or feel of the package. We expect up to a 55% weight reduction depending on the finish we apply Quantum to.
Avient Corporation – Avient Color Prediction Service (CPS)
Avient has developed a digital tool to help assess the impact of colored, recycled resins (PCR)
prior to laboratory trials. This is the first digital tool of its kind which helps recyclers, converters, and brand owners to have a reliable and fast color “design from recycling.” The tool can enable a higher usage of mid to strong-colored PCR grades in high-value applications and will shorten the development time of new products based on PCR
CPS can digitally illustrate, in real-time, the color possibilities or limitations of certain types of PCR, simplifying the overall color decision-making process during product development and launch. The tool helps optimize the ratio of virgin resin to PCR in order to achieve the best acceptable rendering, proven by scientific data. It can be utilized on a colored resin of any given shade and aims to decrease complexity when different grades of PCR are used. It can also help shorten launch time for new product ranges, allowing fast and reliable checks prior to initiating sample development.
Beijing PhaBuilder Biotechnology Co., Ltd – Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology (NGIB)
PhaBuilder created a brand new bio-based manufacturing method called "Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology (NGIB)", using a revolutionary bacteria called Halomonas as the chassis cell to achieve the final product - polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). The genetic modification of Halomonas enables the usage of second generation feedstock such as kitchen waste. Moreover, NGIB is insusceptible to bacteria contamination, enabling an open and continuous fermentation process with no need for sterilization. (PhaBuilder is the first and only company in the world who has achieved this process). Therefore, NGIB has significantly simplified the production process, saved energy and fresh water, eliminated expensive equipment, and increased concentration.
After years of research, the research team and later the company PhaBuilder (founded in 2022) have successfully demonstrated NGIB for at commercial scale to 200 m(3) bioreactors. In October 2022, PhaBuilder completed the 1000- ton plant in Beijing, and PHB and P3HB4HB products have been offered to the market.
Plastic Ingenuity – Recyclable light gauge custom 100% PET thermoformed tray for fragile diagnostic healthcare packaging that incorporates 60% regrind.
Plastic Ingenuity’s 100% PET (60% regrind) thermoformed tray is highly recyclable and has design enhancements including ribbing, flutes, and structure that allows protection of extremely fragile pipette diagnostic instruments. By utilizing the thermoforming process rather than an injection molding process, we were able to save 327,000 lbs. of material annually, reduce plastic used by 58%, and utilize 100% PET material, including 60% regrind.
Turtle Petals LDA – Green Petals: Home Compostable Coffee Capsules & Solutions for hot drinks
We are creating a complete range of Home compostable products related to coffee and hot drinks, such as cups and stirrers. This way, we offer a complete solution for roasters, hot drink companies and other B2B customers. Our products are optimized for injection, ensuring high productivity, and can be easily customized for each customer.
Around 60 billion coffee capsules, made mainly of plastic or aluminum, are consumed each year. Besides being recyclable, more than 50 billion of these capsules ends up going to landfills. As they are contaminated by coffee or other products inside, they cannot be thrown on the proper recycling bin and should be returned to the supplier for a sustainable disposal. However, many suppliers do not accept return of used products.
GreenPetals products are Domestically/Home Compostable, which guarantee a simple disposal, as it is compostable within organic waste, even in the garden, without needing the traditional existing industrial composting processes. Being 100% in bio-based material from local suppliers, it has reduced carbon footprint and assure and sustainable production cycle.
